good morning, everybody, i'm thomas roberts, topping the agenda, breaking news, once again the weather has thrown a monk wreeyh in convention plans. thunderstorms moving the site of president obama's thursday evening speech. due to a potential for severe weather thursday night, the president's speech has been moved from bank of america stadium to the time warner cable arena. the venue for the first two nights of the convention. now 65,000 had credentials to be in the open arena, which is carolina panthers stadium. they are being told they shouldn't plan to attend tomorrow night in that arena. president obama arrives in charlotte today and we are learning that he will not do a walk through at the time warner center this afternoon. he was scheduled to do one at the bank of america stadium today. we are learning from the obama camp, even the balloon drop, all

important balloon drop iconic of those moments may be in jeopardy. the decision for the venue switch made just in the last few hours. joining me from the convention site is ben labolt, national press secretary for the obama campaign. >> thanks for having me. >> let's get to the breaking news about the fact that the speech will be switched so that everyone will stay dry basically from the big 65,000 person arena of the carolina panthers stadium now inside to the time warner cable arena. what was behind this decision and how quickly did you need to make it based on weather? >> ultimately public safety comes first. we had 65,000 people slalted to attend and we can't put them in that position. we looked at all of the weather forecasts out this morning and several predicted severe weather in the middle of the program tomorrow night. this was the moment when we needed to make a decision because we had to begin the site at the stadium. we had to make a final call to

keep it at the arena. for those folks with credentials, the president will hold a conference call in advance of remarks tomorrow night. we'll see if there's an opportunity for them to catch up for events along the trail in the weeks ahead. ultimately public safety drove this decision. >> you talk about the 65,000 ticket holders and ones with community credentials, republicans will say this isn't about weather but about enthusiasm and you weren't able to get the turnout that you expected to fill that stadium. and it's easier to do it inside. what's your response? >> i think those are unfortunate comments. we had 19,000 people on the wait list in addition to the 65,000 people ready to see the president tonight. i think if you look to the stories out this morning, there was a clear difference in enthusiasm here in charlotte than you saw in tampa last week. you saw the reception of the first lady's speech about the president's grit and determination in making decisions during challenging

times for our nation to a future leader of our party, mayor castro's remarks. i don't think there's been a lack of enthusiasm in charlotte. >> because of weather situation there will be no going back and forth. this is the solid plan with the president arriving today, there will not be a return, correct? >> that's correct, this is a final decision. >> final decision? >> final decision. >> as you brought up about the fact there is enthusiasm and michelle obama nailed it last night. a lot of passion from the first lady, all of the speakers a lot of red meat to the base as well. the republicans are saying, not a lot of talk about jobs and the president plan and the fact that he doesn't have one that a lot of people know how he'll create them. is bill clinton going to help make that case tonight? he is the grandest star of the left. >> he do think you'll see a forward looking vision for how we create good paying sustainable jobs for the middle class and restore economic security for the middle class, which you didn't hear in tampa.

castro talked about building from the middle class out. from president clinton tonight i think you'll hear the fact we built the economy from the middle class out in 90s and resulted in a government surplus and 23 million jobs. in the decade that followed, we pursued the policies that governor romney and congressman ryan proposed. stripping back oversight from banks and polluters and assuming the market will take care of the rest. the problem with that, a financial house of cards that collapsed in 2008 leaving our economy careening. why wouldn't we go with the policies we know worked? we've done them before. >> what do you say to those who say they are sharp elbows behind the scenes those working the staffle bill clinton and obama team and may be bad blood between the two. >> president clinton has been a powerful surrogate for this campaign. he's been raising money for the president. he'll hit the stump for the president.

we've been working closely with them as they develop this speech. i think this is the sort of palace intrigue you might read around the beltway but we've got a great relationship and speak with him frequently. >> stay dry down there. obama for america national press secretary. thanks again. >> mother nature aside, the president will have a tough act to follow when he speaks on thursday night. michelle obama hitting a home one with a speech that had the democratic crowd crying and laughing and on its feed. the mom in chief touted her husband's humble roots, early days as a family and man she says remains unchanged after four years in the oval office. >> you see even back then when barack was senator and presidential candidate, to me he was still the guy who picked me up for our dates in a car that was so rusted out, i could actually see the pavement going by in a hole in the passenger side door.

and standing before you four years ago, i knew that i didn't want any of that to change if barack became president. well, today after so many struggles and triumphs and moments that have tested my husband in ways i never could have imagined, i have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are. no, it reveals who you are. >> i thought she hit it out of the park. it was the best speech, period. i thought that she did a phenomenal job of laying out the argument for her husband's second term. >> all right, there we have it, michael steele giving his estimation of last night's speech from the first lady on "morning joe." joining me now is melissa harris perry. i want to get straight to it and talk about first lady's speech.

which the president watched last night with sasha and malia, a highly tweeted picture from the treaty room. she talked about being mom in chief, her husband's rusted out car, he was the same person she fell in love with and americans fell in love with four years ago. do you think she was able to sell that message and remind everybody what they got in her husband four years ago when they voted for him and what they will get once again if they reelect him? >> the money line is the line you played a moment ago. where the first lady says being president doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are. here's why that's so critical. we know from polling data that americans like president obama. they find him honest. they find him compelling. they like his story. they see how it engages the american story. what the first lady did last night was to say, take those feelings you have about the president, about my husband, and go ahead and transfer them into

a political position. it is fine to take the sort of attachment and affection you have for this man and see that as part of the squall fiction for his perfectresidency. the money line was the way she connected the public man who is president obama to the personal man who is barack obama her husband. that knitting together was truly what made this speech a useful political speech in addition to just an amazing piece of american hrhetoric to watch and enjoy. >> did not mention mitt romney by name a single time but she drew a sharp contest between the obamas and romneys. i want to remind everybody. >> like so many american families, our families weren't asking for much. they didn't begrudge anyone else's successor care others had much more than they did. in fact, they admired it. we learned about dignity and decency.

that how hard you work matters more than how much you make. that helping others means more than just getting head yourself. >> how did first lady do with getting the message out there to middle class voters for the struggling families compared to what we heard last week from ann romney. >> two critical things we saw there. one is as you heard, she went straight at their issue, notion of class warfare, we're part of the group of people who are as spir raceal. and last week it was the notion that success is measured in just one way, basically by a profit bottom line. she said, no, we have a much broader, inclusive way of success. so in young and so in love and so in debt. for a lot of americans, it's part of that sense of empathy, that this is a couple who even

saltsman. >> let's begin with the breaking news the change of venue because of weather that is due in charlotte. kristen kul cow xi sent this statement, the democrats continue to downgrade convention events due to lack of enthusiasm. this time moving out of bank of america panthers stadium, problems filling the street. ben lebolt said that's not true at all. this is out of public safety issues and they do expect rauk us thunderstorms tomorrow night. what do you think of that response and the suggestion it was because of lack of enthusiasm? >> if the republicans think it was for lack of enthusiasm, i think they need to open their eyes and pay attention to what happened in their convention versus ours. if you were on the convention, that was an amazing speech by michelle obama, fantastic speech by mayor castro. these were great energizing

events. listen, when you're talking about a venue and i have no doubt whatsoever, not only we were going to get 65,000 plus, we were going to fill that stadium to the rafters. i'm not worried about that. if you've been in charlotte as i have and other people have, you've seen the weather here. it is the smart move and safe move and right move. i guarantee you if they are worried about our enthusiasm, they need to look in the mirror. a after president obama's speech they won't be any question on enthusiasm whatsoever. >> if you look at the social media enthusiasm, michelle obama's speech resonated with people there at the peak of 28,003 tweets a minute. that's double the state of the union, more than romney's speech last week. spouses don't normally turn the dial at the polls but that's serious reach. is michelle the spouse that could buck the trends here, especially turning around what was maybe an unpopular forecast for first lady four years ago, now the brightest star they

have? >> it's incredible. as you said, thomas, four years ago people did question whether michelle obama was a liability to the obama campaign. she's turned out to be really the star really of the obama family as good a speaker as her husband is. she gave an incredible speech last night. it was beautiful speech craft as melissa harris-perry said earlier and delivered in a soft e. genuine way. michelle obama is the chief ambassador of hugs from the obama campaign and very smart where she's positioned herself. a lot of nickelodeon talking to children. she comes across as someone you know and she's so likeable and genuine. she was bound to knock it out of the park because her personality is so winning. >> the other headlining speaker that we played a clip from was julian castro. are republicans worried that nights two and three if they go the same day as night one, this could be a game change for the

president's campaign? >> well, i think they are off to a good start. it was well scripted and this was their second convention and learned a lot from the first one. mayor castro gave a passionate speech. his daughter is a future star, no question about that. but still, one thing we didn't hear much about last night was the economy. we didn't hear much about jobs and unemployment rate. and those are the issues people really matter in this election and they are talking about. they are talking about hey, that was a good speech because i don't have a job i was able to sit home and watch it. at the end of the day, a little bit like cotton candy, good but not much substance. >> we just because we are that good, we have kareena victoria castro's hair flipping. she is a future star, either of politics of pantene commercials, i don't know. >> i'm for both of those. >> both of those. she's absolutely adorable and her dad did a great job but her dad was thrown off and didn't

realize his daughter was on the jumbotron so long. for this headline for castro's speech today they called an obama 2004 redo, did castro outdo president obama '04? there was some people that thought he was off to a slow start but got the crowd going. >> he started nervous when he began the delivery. afterwards, thomas, a lot of the buzz out there was that had michelle obama not delivered that speech last night, castro would have been the star of the night. he delivered really an incredible speech i do think it had echos of barack obama in 2004. he's clearly a rising star in the party. i have to tell you, i think julian castro is in reality what republicans want marco rubio to be. he has a genuine american story and talked about humble beginnings in a way that was so passionate and real and with such sin seert even the slow start, it was real. he was incredible. i think the democratic party have found their future star.

ted strickland, duval patrick, other than michelle obama delivered performances. >> with the castro brothers, you get two for one. >> they are twins. >> there are two of them. real fast, chip and chris, i want to get on the record about this. the manager said they are going to quote make 2008 on ground look like jurassic park. chip, i'll start with you, do you think they can come through on that type of promise? >> it's going to be really tough. the states i travel in and the enthusiasm is not what it was in 2008. and he's not going to have the amount of money to outspend his opponent like last time. the last campaign had something 30 or 40 staffers in utah, a state they knew they would lose by 50 points. i don't see it again this time. >> it is a reality that the enthusiasm is not as great as four years ago.

>> there's always an element any time you run for re-election when you look at the ground game and operation that the obama folks, not only do they have the experience from four years ago but they've gotten better and smarter at it. i think the other part is the message, message feeds the ground. what you saw last night in those speeches is not someone wanting to be commander in chief. running to be empathizer in chief. you saw someone who understands the problems of the middle class, hard working families and that message i think resonates and will make april strong contrast to governor romney's policies and those policies for people for most part believe we're responsible for this crisis. i think you add those two pieces together, you have a great recipe for a strong ground game and strong finish this election. >> plus, karina castro and the hair flipping. don't forget about that. >> thank to joanne reid and chip saltsman and stick with our heavyweights in primetime, 7:00

work? i'm joined by democratic congressman elijah cummings who represents the state of maryland. great to have you here. >> good to be with you. >> we appreciate it. let's talk about how far did last night go towards pumping up the enthusiasm of the base and also this change of venue for the president's speech? do you think that will have an effect raining on the parade literally? >> i think they had to do it. i'm saddened they had to do it because i have at least 500 people who have asked me for tickets for tomorrow. there's no enthusiasm gap here. but the fact is that they had to do. but as far as last night was concerned, i thought the first lady laid out a case very well. and she showed how the pain that she and her husband experienced, wur turned into passion and turned into a mission. and that that underlies everything that they do. and i think that that speech transcended politics, transcended race issues all

kinds of things. i think it is a very, very good speech of the one of the best i've ever heard. >> late yesterday before the democrats kicked off the convention, the national debt officially topped a $16 trillion mark, something republicans seized on right a with a. listen to paul ryan on the campaign trail in iowa. >> we had a debt clock at the convention last week and i don't seep the debt clock at the convention this week. the problem is the president keeps kicking the can down the road. >> is this the greatest economic threat to our future, the fiscal cliff at the end of this year? and what should president obama do to fix this if he is granted a second term? >> certainly we are concerned about it and the president has put forth plans to address that. keep in mind now, let's not kid ourselves as ryan was speaking, i was thinking that they are responsible for at least 10.some percent trillion of that debt. and i think that after this election, the president has to

sit down, work with these folks and hopefully after they've done all they can do to stop him, they'll realize that the american people want them to not be obstructionists but to work with the president to address the issues. we are -- the president has made it clear he wants to address them but he's got to have some help from our republican friends who have stood in the way of almost every single thing he's tried to do. >> as you mentioned, 500 people that asked you for tickets, they still may be enthusiastic because the or yells tied in the al east first place. as a fellow marylander, i had to give you props, just say orioles and they'll be good to you. >> i will, thank you. >> coming up next, women groups defending their choice. >> put simply, women in america cannot trust mitt romney. we cannot trust mitt romney to

n welcome back, we want to bring you up to speed on breaking news we told you about earlier. this new video of the earthquake that took place in costa rica, 7.6 magnitude registered there. as you can tell from the shaking of this building camera. and the not too much damage as we can see from what took place there. you can tell the severe violent shaking that was efforted from this magnitude, 7.6 earthquake. it was something that was we reported earlier about tsunami warnings. they were sent out in error.

correct? >> they were sent in an error. we want to say those warnings have been canceled. again, a 7.6 magnitude quake hitting off the costa rica coast. we'll bring you more information as we get details of damage. a coastal area along the pacific rim of costa rica. >> the president's prime time speech now moving from a 74,000 seat outdoor stadium to a smaller indoor venue. nbc's mark potter is outside where the speech was supposed to take place. a lot of disappointed people who had credentials to get in. >> reporter: the democrats had planned for the president to speak thursday night here at the bank of america stadium, an open air stadium, as you indicated, mother nature and the weather forecasters have intervened and now forecasts for the potential

for severe weather thursday night. thunderstorms and lightning also possible. and because of that, in an abundance of caution and with safety in mind, they decided they were going to have to move that event back to the covered arena where the rest of the convention has been held. no one here would be surprised by this because over the last couple of days, we have had a lot of very heavy rain here. quite a few outbursts and thunder and lightning. so given that threat, this just seems something that they had to do because you just never know. 64,000 people, members of the community had signed up to come in here. now they will not be able to see the president and that's why there's so much disappoint in the party and in the community, thomas. >> saying it's out of an abundance of caution for anybody. we appreciate it we'll go to ron allen inside the convention center. ron, explain what does this mean for the rest of the convention and for certain people who hadn't planned to attend who now might?

>> reporter: let me show you around this arena. this a unique venue. this is where i was when michelle obama and mayor castro spoke last night. it's a very good sight lines to the podium right there over my shoulder in that direction. there are people down there doing walkthroughs for the events of the day. it's an intimate arena and very vertical. most of the seats are somewhat close to the stage. they are great acoustics in here, that speech last night, both of them had a lot of power and a lot of electricity. the room was really alive when this happens. as you look down on pt floor, you'll see it's a relatively small floor. in fact, there are only seven statement delegations on floor of the convention, illinois and delaware and north carolina, the host state, of course, and key swing state, the other states on the floor with the beth seats are virginia, colorado, nevada, iowa, key important battleground

states, states like new york very blue are way up in the rafters where you can't even see. they have a great view anyway every manner of jumbotron and video screen here. while the campaign is trying to downplay the significance of not having a big outdoor event and push back any discussion of this enthusiasm gap, it does mean a lot. they did want to have this huge, huge gathering as they did back in 2008 because a lot of big gatherings that the president was able to generate in the final weeks and days of the campaign were credited with helping push him over the top. they are trying to say they'll have just as much excitement here tomorrow night. thomas? >> ron allen, i appreciate it. julian castro made headlines for his keynote address but it was his daughter who really stole the show. there she is, carina victoria castro flipping her hair back and forth. she is already a social media

secretary tom vil sack, i know you are not here in an official capacity to talk about the campaign but you do however support the president. i do want to dive in because this debate, the question are you better off has evolved in this cart eer comparison. as we dig in the numbers, george w. bush at the end of his term, the economy lost over 300,000 jobs and right before the october stock market crash. then president obama comes in during that down it is turn and things grow and jobs are up and weekly wages and even more than 1.9 million jobs added another wage stock jump. but the evidence of growth and stabilization is there. is linking mitt romney to the bush years enough of an argument though for the president to win re-election? because that's what they keep doing. saying that mitt romney is going to be a redo of something we've already lived through. >> it's important for folks to know where we started in this

administration losing hundreds and thousands of jobs and the stock market was in teep redeep recession and housing was in trouble. we've seen return of housing market and seen the stock market double and seen 29 consecutive months of job growth. the real message is what's happening in rural america. record farm income, record exports, unemployment going down that fast rate. i'm happy to talk about a comparison where we were in january of 2009 to where we are today. in rural america we're making a comeback and american agriculture is helping lead the way. >> you do come a state iowa, that is do better economically but elsewhere people may not feel things are better. we have a new jobs report coming out friday, the morning after the president's speech, is this a make or break moment for him? obviously owes going to be riding high off thursday night but could come off quickly it the jobs number is bleak. >> it's important to know no one

month should dictate. it's a trend, 29 consecutive months after loses jobs, no one is satisfied with the pace, we want to continue to grow and expand the economy. the president has a plan to build an american economy built to last and making and creating. that's happening in rural america. i think you'll see strong, steady job growth. we'll try to pick up the pace. congress needs to pass the jobs bill that the president has been asking them to pass for some time. >> i know you made time before catching a flight. thank you so much for making time here. embracing equality, marriage equality, it's on the democratic platform for the first time ever and speakers are all taking notice. this country was built by working people. the economy needs manufacturing.

the venue too people, people looking for seats. we'll watch that as well. we are watching of course what's happening in charlotte, there's a lot of hoopla but outside of that, democrats are exploding on social media. there's a new pugh study that finds liberals engage the most on services like twitter and facebook at 74%. while conservatives are at when it comes to political activities, democrats also think that social media is important at a rate roughly 50% higher than republicans. now, another plus for the left as you see right here on the screen, minorities use social media more than whites. 38% of african-americans said social networking sites were somewhat or very important in discussing political issues. h hispanics were at 30%. whites at 21%. africans go to social networking sites more than others to keep up with the latest topics. hispanics are not far behind. whites are at 33%. social media is key to reach

if you want to keep tabs on twitter coverage, look for us at #msnbc2012. so if last night was any indication the obama campaign is really relying on the women's vote come november, women from washington all across the country had prime speaking spots last night on the convention floor. among them, fair pay activist lily ledbetter who championed the president's support of the fair pay act and took a hit directly from mitt romney. >> women still earned just 70 cents for every dollar men make. maybe 23 cents doesn't sound like a lot to someone with a swiss bank account, a cayman island investment. >> another speaker from last night is nancy keenan of pro choice america. great to have you with me. i want to jump right in because last night, you spoke of knowing the president and his commitment to women in theisio to have an abortion a decision between a woman, her family and her god. now, god is often invoked in the

pro-life argument against abortion. why did you think it was important to bring up god in your speech last night? >> well, look, i think that women in this country have this very fundamental value of freedom and privacy and part of that is making a decision about their life, and we are people of faith. so it is not just all by the other side but rather, women in this country that are faced with an unintended pregnancy make a decision and they make that in the privacy with their family and their god and because we are people of faith as well. >> i want to play for everybody something that you said last night about mitt romney and then ask you a question about it on the other side. take a look. >> we cannot trust mitt romney to protect our health. we cannot trust mitt romney to respect our rights. >> trust and reproductive rights, obviously a huge narrative that's taken the grips of the political conversation leading up to both conventions but why would you argue romney

is not the right candidate for women's health or women's rights? is it just a look back over his past posts, his past stances on this and the fact that he will flip? >> well, that's just it. you can't trust him. at one point, you know, he argued that he was pro-choice and in the next, he's gone so extremely far to the right, both he and ryan. we're talking about a man that supports personhood amendments in this country. this is a guy that said he would defund family planning and planned parenthood. he said he would overturn a woman's right to abortion care in this country. that is so outside the mainstream and so extreme that most americans i think reject and don't trust that what he says and what he will do are two different things. my bottom line is, i don't believe you can trust mitt romney and our president, president barack obama, has stood with us as women. >> are mitt romney's politics more damaging to women or paul ryan's? >> they're the same team.

they're playing on the same team. i think that mitt romney mirrors paul ryan and paul ryan has a record here. i think the other thing is that the two of them have gone out and are talking about overturning roe, about making sure that women don't make this decision but that politicians will make this decision. it's something in this country we don't value is having a politician in with women as they face decisions around their health care and around their reproductive rights. >> nancy, i just want to point out, cecile richards of planned parenthood and sandra fluke will also be speaking. what does it mean to you that such powerful voices for female reproductive rights are encapsulated in the dnc? >> well, i think that one, the democratic platform talks about women's reproductive rights front and center. number two, women are going to make the difference in this election for barack obama. and i believe that my colleagues with cecile and sandra, that we have been the face of this
